I am interested in the basic, physical act of mark-making, and in the abstract character of each mark. When I repeat the same gesture over and over in an obsessive practice, it unveils a register of emotional nuances, tensions and rhythm. I build my drawings, and find the repetive gestures to be both meditative and demanding, as I focus to stay within the rules I set for myself. The imagined course for each line is altered by slight imperfections in the paper, the thickness of the pencil-point as it wears down and the varying strength in my arm. The resulting grid remains as kind of diary of my time spent.
I work with an 8B Faber Castell pencil, and the steel-colored graphite surface of the drawing is slightly reflective. |
