When I look at the world around me, I see things to draw: random people or common objects I come across in my daily life in New York City. My work is lead by a double interest: the observation of the society I live in as well as a visual research into graphic ways of representation.
My favorite place to draw is the subway where I have produced two extensive series of portraits:
- "New Yorkers": Using New Yorker magazine subscription cards as canvasses, I has been observing and drawing random people travelling on the MTA trains. These small black and white ink drawings explore human nature as well as attitudes, trends and seasons to create a portrait of the city.
- "LiSTENING": A series of portraits of New Yorkers listening to their iPods. The drawings are made with a minimal number of black lines. Only face and hands are represented. The lines of the head-phones wires create a graphic connection between the different parts of the drawing. Back in the studio, I edit and enlarge these portraits with acrylic on large white canvas. |
