In part my work is a way to curb fidgety behavior and an overblown work ethic. The materials come to me via epiphany, and are selected for their metaphorical resonance. Scientific studies show that people are happiest in in-between moments--picking up mail from the post office box, filling the gas tank, petting a dog outside the corner deli. My work identifies the material substance of those moments and celebrates their nobility. Notebook reinforcement labels and security envelopes shield against vulnerability and safeguard privacy. Paper maps assure us of our place and allude to paths taken even as they have evaporated into cyberspace. Often the materials I choose have a poignancy for their inevitable obsolescence.
The process of repetitive accumulation helps me resist jumping to conclusions, and lets the rush of finding endless forms from a single element take over when I am able to accommodate it. |
