HOVEY BROCK

When we look, we usually don’t see what’s there. I’m interested in helping viewers to release the habits that govern the way they look. My work has simple images that invite viewers to recreate the painting process that formed them. I’m really inviting the viewers to share my painting experience, with its odd tension of pleasure and anxiety.

My paintings and watercolors are made up of many layers of transparent washes built up over repeated sessions. The colors are nuanced to mimic shifting light patterns. Everything I do is designed to create an experience which is simultaneously enjoyable and slightly disorienting.

I’m satisfied when viewers tell me that they feel “lost” in the painting, yet at the same time relaxed. Or that they get carried along on a flow within the paintings as they become absorbed by the details and unfamiliar sensations. If viewers can drop ideas of subject and object, the passage of time, the mental chatter that fills our brains, for even a few moments, and really look, then I have succeeded as a painter.
