MARIE LAFOREY

Marie Laforey is a self-taught artist based in New York, USA who maintains a sustainable art practice using primarily organic material. She enjoys the tactility of working with organic mediums and learning how to craft preserved moss, clay and natural elements into beautiful abstract compositions. Primarily inspired by nature, repetition, patterns, texture and geometry are essential elements that are omnipresent in her works.

Laforey ceramic works are unique pieces that alter in patterns to give an illusion of movement and depth by using clay’s potential for building sculptural dimension. The repetitive use of a unique element, the circle is centered to her work. The circle has often been associated with the female and to Mother Earth. It has no beginning and no end, it is the whole, the essence of things. It symbolizes the ongoing energy found in nature. In Laforey’s ceramic pieces, hundreds of circles are carefully connected together to transform into a unique work full of forces and movements. The shifting components form a fluid composition that confounds expectations and inspires wonder.

Inspired by the scales of fish, Laforey’s Squamae Series use a repetitive, circular design that echoes the texture and rhythm of natural forms. Like a diary entry, each "scale or dots" in her work represents a fragment of life, blending the ordered and the chaotic in a way that mirrors both personal reflection and the constant life cycles. The simplicity and uniformity of her works invite contemplation on time, memory, and transformation, offering a glimpse into an emotional or personal experience, much like a page in a diary.

Her abstract moss assemblages are textural green sceneries that resemble aerial landscape views that invite the viewer to escape today’s chaotic digital life and reconnect with natural beauty.

Her works have been placed into various private collections in the US and hospitality facilities. She is now represented by the Muriel Guépin Gallery in New York.
